Some of my earliest fishing memories are of fishing with an Ugly Stik. I can’t even count how many fish I’ve caught on those poles, but I do know they always did the job. The newest Ugly Stik in my arsenal of fishing gear, is Shakespeare’s Ugly Stik GX2 Rod and Reel Combo. Just like all Ugly Stiks, durability is what this rod and reel combo is all about.
While most serious anglers tend to shy away from combos at this price point, I can tell you that this is not just some beginner’s rod and reel. Paired up with some Berkley Fused Crystal Fireline, this combo really packs a punch.
To be honest, the first time I cast out my line I wasn’t really sure what to expect; but once I fired out that first lure, I was pleasantly surprised. The line shot right through the guides like butter, and the performance was on par with rods and reels that are 2 – 3 times this price point.
The reel and the drag system were both extremely smooth, which is another thing you don’t normally see with other combos at this price point. And as for the rod, the graphite-fiberglass hybrid blank was strong and powerful, making it a great setup for even larger fish.
Actually catching fish with this pole was also a good experience, as I found the rods sensitive tip allowed you to feel just about everything. Hooksets were also pretty good, and so far I haven’t had any problems related to the pole.
